History of Kinsalebeg
Population Changes
Introduction
Full census statistics figures for Ireland are really only available from 1901 onwards as the bulk of the statistics for earlier decades were unfortunately destroyed in the 1922 attack on the Four Courts. The Irish Civil war began in Dublin on the 28th June 1922 when the Pro-Treaty Provisional Government attacked the Anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army (IRA) which was stationed in the Four Courts in Dublin. The Pro-Treaty forces won this particular battle but one of the unfortunate results of the battle was the loss of a major part of the Irish historical archives including pre-1901 census data which were stored in the Four Courts. The loss of this data, mainly by the bombing and subsequent fire of the 30th June 1922, has been a major loss to Irish historical research and makes it difficult to pull together census information on individuals and parishes before 1901. There are some global census statistics for townlands from 1821 onwards and we will include some of this information in this overview. However any detailed townland or parish analysis of population before this period is very difficult. We will attempt to summarise the Kinsalebeg population statistics for the period 1821 to 2006 but before that we will have a brief look at the effect of the Black Death in Kinsalebeg in the period 1348-1350.
Black Death (1348-1350)
There were evidently no survivors of the Black Death in the parish of Kinsalebeg, Co Waterford. This is a stark and sobering picture even when being viewed through the mists of time over six hundred and fifty years later. Kinsalebeg is the only location in Ireland which has been identified as being deserted in 1351 after the passing of the Black Death plague. The Black Death had a devastating effect across all parts of Ireland, Europe and Asia. There were undoubtedly many devastated parishes and towns across Ireland after the Black Death but Kinsalebeg was unique in being positively declared completely deserted in 1351 and we will outline the circumstances of this later. The arrival of a plague was the last thing Ireland needed at this time as the preceding decades had been scourged with rebellions, famine and disease.
Black Death Symptoms
The Black Death came to Europe in 1347 and made its unwelcome appearance in Ireland when the first occurrence was recorded in Howth, Co. Dublin in July 1348. This terrible plague came in three forms namely bubonic plague, pneumonic plague and septicaemic plague but they all generally had the same lethal results. Bubonic plague was the most common form of the disease which was so called because those affected suffered painful swellings or buboes in the groin, armpits and neck areas with lymph nodes swelling up to the size of an egg. The symptoms included high fever, hallucinations, nausea and delirium and up to seventy five per cent of sufferers died within three to five days. Pneumonic plague affected the lungs by filling them with infected fluid and was even more lethal than bubonic plague with a mortality rate of over ninety per cent and sufferers generally surviving less than three days. Septicaemic plague was the most lethal of the three forms of plague and affected the blood stream. The mortality rate for septicaemic plague was almost one hundred per cent and in many cases the sufferer died within twenty four hours.
Origins of the Black Death
The Black Death plague started in China and was generally spread by fleas from infected rodents, such as rats, and spread rapidly throughout Europe and indeed other parts of the world. Its progression was mainly through the trade routes and it was quite common for the disease to first appear in the ports of a country as a result of rodents on ships and within cargoes. In Ireland it first appeared in Howth and quickly spread to Louth and Meath. It then appeared in Waterford and from there up the river to places like Kilkenny where Friar John Clyn of the Franciscan order wrote a detailed diary of the devastating progress of the plague until his own death from the disease. The spread of the plague to southern Irish ports like Youghal, Waterford and Cork was generally as a result of the shipping trade particularly from British ports such as Bristol but once it arrived in an area it rapidly spread inland through trade, travel, waterways and movement of animals and people. The pneumonic form of the disease was an air-borne version which in effect travelled from human to human over the air ways and spread rapidly particularly in the winter months. All forms of the plague were extremely contagious and in general when one person in the house contracted the disease the rest of the family usually contracted it within a few days so whole families were wiped out at the same time. Friar Clyn recorded in his diary:
“Many died of boils and abscesses and pustules which erupted on their shins or under their armpits; others died frantic with pain in their head and others spitting blood … This plague was at its height in Kilkenny during Lent; for on the sixth day of March eight of the Friars Preachers died. There was hardly a house in which one only had died, but as a rule man and wife with their children and all the family went the common way of death”. He also noted that “whosoever touched the sick or the dead was immediately infected and died, so that penitent and confessor were carried to the grave” and “from very fear and horror, men were seldom brave enough to perform the works of piety and mercy, such as visiting the sick and burying the dead”.
Friar Clyn obviously knew that his own death from the disease was imminent as his last entry in 1349 noted:
“I, Brother Clyn of the Friars Minor, have written in this book the notable events which befell in my time ….. I, seeing many ills, waiting for death till it come, have committed to writing what I have truly heard; and lest the writing perish with the writer, I leave parchment for continuing the work, if haply any man of the race of Adam escape this pestilence and continue the work I have begun.”
The term Black Death arose because one of the symptoms of the dreadful disease was the blackening of the skin around the swellings or buboes. It is estimated that over one third of the population of Europe died in the period from 1347 to 1351, with an estimated 200 million people being wiped out. Whereas no parts of Ireland were really spared the effects of the plague the port towns such as Dublin, New Ross, Youghal, Waterford, Cork and Drogheda were particularly badly affected by the spread of the disease. It has been estimated that coastal towns like Youghal had mortality rates which were close to 50%. The English or Anglo-Irish colonies, which were often based around towns and ports, were more seriously affected by the Black Death than those native Gaelic Irish who were living in the countryside. However all parts of the country were seriously affected to some degree or other by this appalling plague. The Benedictine monk and chronicler Ranulf Higden stated that plague was:
“especially violent … around the coastal towns of England and Ireland”.
Richard FitzRalph, theologian and bishop of Armagh, in a communication with the Pope in 1349, outlined that:
“the plague had fallen most heavily on those who lived near the sea and found more victims among fisherfolk and sailors than among any other class of men”.
The Black Death in Kinsalebeg (1348-1350)
At this particular time the parish of Kinsalebeg was part of the Manor of Inchiquin which comprised the boroughs of Kinsalebeg, Youghal and Inchiquin. The Manor of Inchiquin comprised a series of what were known as burgesses, which were similar to present day townlands, but in that period a burgess typically reflected an area of land owned by an individual known as a burgess. A burgess was a person with municipal authority or privileges who, in the case of the Manor of Inchiquin, would have been the owner of land or a trading facility. There were around twenty four burgesses in Kinsalebeg in this period but the land was the subject to a long standing dispute. Maurice FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Desmond, had been in continuous confrontation with both the ruling English and the native Irish rebels in the first half of the 14th century. He waged an ongoing rebellion on all fronts and was a thorn in the side of both the English and Irish. At the same time the Manor of Inchiquin, which included Kinsalebeg, was in the ownership of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere, who was born in 1275. The Earl of Desmond occupied the Manor of Inchiquin, and some other Munster estates, and refused to relinquish control of them. This occupation went on for a number of decades until eventually the daughters of the then deceased Bartholomew De Badlesmere, who were absentee landlords living in England, demanded the removal of The Earl of Desmond from their estate. They eventually gained control of their inheritance in 1351 and it was during the legal negotiations surrounding this dispute that it came up in proceedings that all the burgesses of Kinsalebeg were deserted in 1351. It was from this court evidence that it was established that Kinsalebeg was completely deserted as a result of the Black Death epidemic which had wreaked havoc throughout this area in the years just before 1351. The proximity of Kinsalebeg to the large port of Youghal was undoubtedly the primary reason for the spread of the plague as the arrival of disease carrying ships was a big factor in the spread of the disease. The generally prevailing south-west winds coupled with the Youghal-Ferrypoint ferry service and the active food market between Youghal and Kinsalebeg meant that it was highly unlikely that Kinsalebeg was ever going to be able to escape the spread of the disease from Youghal.
We have covered the history of the De Badlesmere involvement in Kinsalebeg and the Manor of Inchiquin elsewhere in this history under land ownership. In her “History of Medieval Ireland1” the historian Professor Otway-Ruthven also identifies Kinsalebeg as a probable location of Black Death desertion with no obvious sign of any habitation in 1351. Kinsalebeg was the only location in Ireland identified as being completely deserted after the Black Death by Otway-Ruthven and she was using the same De Badlesmere court evidence that we have outlined above.
Partial Census of Kinsalebeg in 1659
The most comprehensive census information for Kinsalebeg covers the period 1821 to 2006 but we include additional partial census information below covering earlier periods of history. Much of this census data is incomplete as it was compiled for reasons other than population analysis. The information was collected as part of plans in areas like land confiscation or taxation and as such was more concerned with land occupancy and ownership.
The Census of Ireland circa 16595 was compiled by Sir William Petty. It is called a census but the reason for its compilation was more to do with land and taxation issues than an accurate census of inhabitants. The names of parishes and townlands are shown as they were originally recorded but are usually identifiable with present day names. The census gives the names of the tituladoes or those with title to land but does not list their family members. It records the number of persons (English/Scots and Irish) resident in each townland, parish and barony but not their names. It also lists the most common names in the barony with the number of inhabitants having that name. The townland names for Kinsalebeg are fairly obvious with the possible exception of Monastry which was an old name for Monatray. Pilltown seems to have been the main centre of population at the time with fifty eight inhabitants and this was also the seat of the Walsh family of which Thomas Walsh was the current head. Monatray (Monastry) was the other large population area with forty inhabitants in 1659. The other big landowners in the area according to the census were Thomas Ronayne, Thomas Tobin and Alexander Roch. The total population of Kinsalebeg in 1659 according to this census was 194 inhabitants but it is possible that the figure refers to the number of tenants or families as distinct from the total number of men, women and children. The headings Irish and English were probably more to indicate Irish and non-Irish and therefore the English heading was probably a catch-all heading for English, Scots, Welsh etc. Thomas Walsh of Pilltown, from the above list, was one of the landowners identified for transplantation from Waterford in the land confiscations in the period after Cromwell. However, as the Walsh history shows, the actual transplantation never took place.
Clashmore had a population of two hundred and sixty three (263) inhabitants in 1659 according to this census. Some of Clashmore townlands are part of Kinsalebeg or other parishes in later census eg Ardsallagh (Andsillage ?), Tinnabinna, Ticknock, Shanacoole. In addition a number of normal Clashmore townlands are missing from the Clashmore census. Walter Mansfield was listed as one of the people transplanted after the post Cromwellian land confiscations.
The population of Grange was two hundred and fifty one (251) according to the 1659 census. Knocknageragh or Summerhill would normally be considered part of Kinsalebeg parish. We assume the townland called Russins is in fact Rusheens which is part of Ardmore parish in later census.
Primary Landowners in the Barony of the Decies in 1659
The above listing of “tituladoes” in the Barony of the Decies gives all the major landowners in the Decies barony area in 1659. The spellings of names and townlands are retained as per the original documents.
Most Common Irish Names in Barony of the Decies in 1659
The above tables show the principal Irish names in the Barony of the Decies in 1659, together with the number of inhabitants having that name. The census indicates “Principall Irish Names” and “their Number” which would indicate that there were other names in the barony which are not included. According to the summary of the 1659 census there were 3703 inhabitants in the Barony of Deaces (Decies) which seems to cover both Decies within Drum (incorporating Kinsalebeg) and Decies without Drum. The 3703 population total is made up of 129 English and 3574 Irish inhabitants according to the census. The total population of Waterford in 1659 was 13,286 according to this census. The census did not cover the complete country but the estimated population of the country at the time has been estimated as being somewhere between half a million and 1.32 million based on this census. We have no verification that either of these figures is accurate but we can assume that the general population at the time was of this order. The list of family names in the Barony of the Decies in 1659 may be useful from a genealogical point of view even though the spelling of the names may vary somewhat from present day names eg Muresie for Morrisey or Dally for Daly.
Kinsalebeg Population (1821-1831)
The population of Kinsalebeg in 1821 was 2607 inhabitants and this had increased to 2780 inhabitants in 1831. There is no further breakdown of the population for individual townlands and bearing in mind that townlands sometimes appear in different parishes in different periods (eg Garranaspic in Kinsalebeg or Ardmore) we will leave these two decades out of further analysis other than to record the population.
Kinsalebeg Population (1841-2006)
There were 2889 inhabitants living in Kinsalebeg in the year 1841 and they occupied 448 houses. One hundred and sixty five years later in the year 2006 there were 481 inhabitants in Kinsalebeg living in 173 houses. This was a reduction of 2408 people or 83% in the population and a reduction of 274 houses or 61% in the period. This is an extraordinary large reduction in the population in that period. However, we shall see later that the massive population decrease was fairly consistent with the change in population in nearby parishes such as Clashmore and Ardmore. In the same period the population of Waterford had reduced from 196,187 in 1841 to 107,961 in 2006 which was a reduction of 88,226 or 45%. This was also quite a significant percentage reduction in population but it was considerably lower than that of Kinsalebeg (45% v 83%). In the whole of Ireland (excl Northern Ireland) the population was 6,528,913 in 1841 and 4,234,925 in 2006 which was a reduction of 2,293,988 or 35% over the period. The population of the 32 counties of Ireland was over 8 million before the famine but for comparison with the census figures from 1926 onwards we will confine our analysis to the 26 counties where the actual population before the famine was 6,528,913 as stated above. If we summarise the population reduction in the period 1841 to 2006 we see that:
(a) Kinsalebeg had an 83% reduction in population from 2889 (1841) to 461 (2006).
(b) Waterford had a 45% reduction in population from 196,187 (1841) to 107,961 (2006)
(c) Ireland (26 counties) had a 35% reduction in the population from 6,528,913 (1841) to 4,234,925 (2006).
Kinsalebeg Population (1841)
The 1841 census is the first relatively comprehensive census of Ireland where detailed figures for townlands and houses are available. We have less comprehensive figures for the years 1821 and 1831 and the population figures before that time are fairly sketchy but we will come back to them at a later stage. The availability of the 1901 and 1911 census2 from the National Archives is of tremendous benefit to historians as the original census documents are available for analysis. Summary census figures for the 1926 to 2006 census3 are available from the Central Statistics Office but there is no breakdown available for townlands at this point. One of the difficulties in comparing population figures over the centuries for Kinsalebeg is that specific townlands appear in different parishes or DEDs (District Electoral Divisions) at different times. Blackbog generally appeared under Clashmore; Knocknageragh or Summerhill appeared under Grange; and Garranaspick was annexed by Ardmore. We were not shy at land grabbing ourselves at different times and Kilgabriel, Kilmaloo, D’Loughtane and Ballyheeny generally appeared under the Kinsalebeg DED. In order to bring some consistency to the figures for comparative purposes we have focused on the following townlands as constituting Kinsalebeg: Ballysallagh, Blackbog, Drumgullane East, Drumgullane West, Garranaspick, Glebe, Glistinane, Kilmeedy East, Kilmeedy West, Knockbrack, Knocknageragh (Summerhill), Lackendarra, Monatray East, Monatray Middle, Monatray West, Moord, Mortgage, Newtown, Pilltown, Prospecthall, Rath, Springfield Lower, Springfield Upper and Toberagoole.
The preceding image gives a breakdown of the population of each townland of Kinsalebeg in 1841 together with the size of each townland in statute acres and the Poor Law valuation of the townland at the time. It also includes the population density per square mile for each townland with the assumption that acreage given is in statute acres and not Irish acres. This is the start point for some of the later statistics and shows up some interesting figures. The most noticeable figure is the size of the population in most of the Kinsalebeg townlands in comparison with today. The primary activities in the parish would have been cottier/peasant farming, fishing and milling. Areas like Monatray, Ballysallagh and Prospecthall would have had large fishing communities whereas Pilltown was heavily involved in milling. If we combine the three Monatray townlands of East, Middle and West we get a total population of 614 in 1841 which is 133 larger than the total population of Kinsalebeg in 2006. Ballysallagh and Pilltown have a population of 332 and 330 respectively which indicate large concentrations of people in those areas at that time. Rath has a population of 220 and Prospecthall has a population of 204. Indeed all the townlands of Kinsalebeg had 1841 populations substantially larger than present day populations.
Population Density of Kinsalebeg in 1841
The population density of Kinsalebeg in 1841 was approximately 423 people per square mile based on a Kinsalebeg population of 2889 inhabitants; statute acres of 4374 acres; and an area of 6.83 Square miles. This is an extremely high rural population density even for the period around 1841 when the population of Ireland was at its highest. If we exclude the large towns/cities from the figures then the average rural population density for the whole of Ireland in 1841 was around 236 people per square mile. The All-Ireland rural population, including Ulster, in 1841 was 7,674,036 rural inhabitants; Statute acres of 20,778,480 acres; and rural square miles of 32,466 sq miles giving a density of 236 inhabitants per square mile. This was around the same density as the rural population of Munster. Some records indicate the average rural population density in 1841 was around 207 persons per square mile. The average rural population density in Waterford was around 240 people per square mile in 1841 based on a Waterford rural population of 172,971 inhabitants; statute acres of 460,884 acres; and rural area of 720 square miles. This is slightly above the national average of 236 people per square mile.
Decies within Drum is the barony in Waterford in which Kinsalebeg is located – it includes Aglish, Ardmore, Ballymacart, Clashmore, Kilmolash (part), Kinsalebeg, Lisgenan or Grange and Ringagonagh. The population density of the Barony of Decies within Drum in 1841 was 289 people per square mile based on a Decies within Drum population of 26,566 inhabitants; statute acres of 58,907 acres; and an area of 92 square miles. This is over 20% higher than the average rural population of 240 and 236 inhabitants per square mile in Waterford and the rest of Ireland respectively. Comparing the above rural population density figures with those of Kinsalebeg in 1841 indicates that the population density of Kinsalebeg was considerably higher than averages for Waterford and the rest of Ireland. If we look at the above table we can see that within Kinsalebeg itself there are townlands with much higher population densities than the Kinsalebeg average. Monatray West has a population density of 777 inhabitants per square mile; Pilltown is 640 persons per square mile; Ballysallagh is 565 persons per square mile; Garranaspick is 518 per square mile and Springfield Upper has a density of 1066 per square mile. Kinsalebeg was definitely the place to live in 1841 if the population statistics are anything to go by. Some nearby parishes such as Ringnagonagh, Clashmore and Aglish also had high population densities in 1841 with Ringnagonagh the only parish of this group with a higher population density than Kinsalebeg. The population in Grange, Ardmore and Ballymacart was also quite high at that time but was spread over a relatively large area so the density per square mile was not so high.
Summary of rural population density per square mile in 1841:
- Average in all rural Ireland including Ulster: 236 people per square mile
- Average in rural Munster: 237 people per square mile
- Average in rural Waterford: 240 people per square mile
- Average in Decies within Drum barony: 288 people per square mile
- Average in Kinsalebeg parish: 423 people per square mile
- Average in Ballysallagh townland: 565 people per square mile
- Average in Pilltown townland: 640 people per square mile
- Average in Monatray West townland: 777 people per square mile
- Average in Ballyheeny parish: 322 people per square mile
The average population density across the whole of Kinsalebeg is 1 person per 1.5 acres in 1841 with 2889 people spread over 4374 acres which would compare with 1 person per 9 acres in 2006 with 481 people in 4374 acres. We include Ballyheeny population statistics for 1841 below as this parish would have close links with Kinsalebeg parish and in many cases Ballyheeny townlands are included in Kinsalebeg.
Ballyheeny Townland Population (1841)
A number of townlands such as Garranaspick, Knocknageragh, Blackbog, normally associated with Kinsalebeg, appear in the census figures for nearby parishes such as Ardmore, Grange and Clashmore. The parish of Ballyheeny also contains a number of townlands which would historically have a close connection with Kinsalebeg and we include census data on them here for completeness. The population density in Ballyheeny in 1841 at 322 persons per square mile is somewhat lower than Kinsalebeg at 423 per square mile. There are some large population concentrations in Ballyheeny such as Ardsallagh with 284 inhabitants; Shanacoole with 332 inhabitants and Ballyheeny itself with a total of 364 inhabitants.
Kinsalebeg Population & Housing Density (1841)
We will now have a look at the 1841 Kinsalebeg housing density in conjunction with the population in the next table.
The average number of persons per house in Kinsalebeg was 6.4 in 1841 with 2889 people living in 448 houses. The average had reduced to 2.78 persons per house in 2006 when 481 people were living in 173 houses. There were two and a half times more houses in 1841 and six times the population. The lowest number of houses recorded in Kinsalebeg parish over the past couple of centuries was probably around 1961 when the population of 408 people was the lowest recorded Kinsalebeg population from the 1800 period. Both the population and the number of houses have gradually increased from 1961 to the present. Ballysallagh had 51 houses in 1841; there were 48 houses in Pilltown; 34 houses in Rath; 30 in Summerhill or Knocknageragh; 25 in Garranaspick and the whole of Monatray had 86 houses. It is difficult to envisage now where all the missing houses were located but it should be possible to identify locations of some of these houses before all traces are erased.
Ballyheeny Population & Housing Density (1841)
The above table contains corresponding population & housing information on Ballyheeny in 1841. The average number of persons per house in Ballyheeny was 6.37 in 1841 with 1720 people living in 270 houses. The average had reduced to 2.83 persons per house in 2006 when 425 people were living in 150 houses. The townlands with the biggest population in 1841 were Shanacoole with 332 inhabitants and Arsallagh with 284 inhabitants. When the two parts of Ballyheeny were combined then the total population in 1851 was 364 people. There were approximately twice the number of houses in 1841 and four times the population when compared to 2006. The lowest population in Ballyheeny parish over the past couple of centuries was in 1961 when the population of 354 people was the lowest recorded Ballyheeny population from the 1800 period. Both the population and the number of houses have gradually increased from 1961 to the present in a similar pattern to Kinsalebeg. There were 57 houses in Shanacoole in 1841 and 44 houses in Ardsallagh. On an overall basis the population changes from 1841 to the present are very similar across all the parishes in close proximity to Kinsalebeg.
Kinsalebeg Population Change during the Great Famine
The population of Kinsalebeg decreased from 2889 to 2284 between 1841 and 1851 which spans the period of the Great Famine. This was a decrease of 605 inhabitants or approximately 21% over the ten years. This was the lowest decrease of parishes in the vicinity of Kinsalebeg with Clashmore decreasing by 25% from 2414 (1841) to 1820 (1851); Ballyheeny decreasing by 22% from 1720 (1841) to 1335 (1851); Ardmore decreasing by 29% from 4044 (1841) to 2886 (1851); Grange decreasing by 32% from 1587 (1841) to 1077 (1851); Glenwilliam decreasing by 40% from 1079 (1841) to 647 (1851); and Grallagh decreasing by 39% from 1284 (1841) to 789 (1851). Templemichael parish had the largest decrease of the nearby rural parishes with a 45% population decrease from 2994 (1841) to 1645 (1851). The average population decrease in the rural parishes surrounding Kinsalebeg was just over 30% and Kinsalebeg at 21% was the lowest decrease of all the parishes in the vicinity.
The population fluctuations in Kinsalebeg between 1841 and 1851 vary significantly from townland to townland as we can see from the table above. Springfield Lower actually shows a population increase of 51% from 70 (1841) to 106 (1851) and at the other end of the scale Mortgage shows a decrease of 84% from 117 (1841) to 19 (1851). Monatray Middle actually shows a population increase of 66% but we believe this is a mistake in the census as Monatray West shows a decrease of 62%. It would appear that some of the Monatary West census figures finished up in the Monatray Middle and possibly Monatray East townlands. We will treat the whole of Monatray as one entity for comparison purposes to avoid confusion.
The Kinsalebeg population decrease was roughly in line with the population decrease in the rural areas of Waterford which decreased by 20% from 172,971 (1841) to 138,754 (1851) between 1841 and 1851. The population of Waterford city actually increased by 9% in this period from 23,216 (1841) to 25,297 (1851) and the overall population of the whole county of Waterford decreased by 16% from 196,187 (1841) to 164,051 (1851) which compares with the 32 county average of a 20% population decrease from 8,175,233 (1841) to 6,552,115 (1851). The 1841 to 1851 decade covers the main part of the famine period even though the famine really went on for a number of years after 1851. The population decreases in Kinsalebeg and surrounding areas, and indeed in the whole of Ireland, are only partially accounted for by famine deaths. There was a significant amount of emigration during this period and there was also population movement of people to local towns and workhouses.
Ballyheeny Population Change during the Great Famine
The population of Ballyheeny decreased from 1720 to 1335 between 1841 and 1851. This was a decrease of 385 inhabitants or approximately 22% over the ten years. This population decrease was similar to the decrease in surrounding parishes. The figures vary between townlands with Raheen showing a decrease of 100% in the population with no inhabitants in 1851 and Tinnabinna showing a small increase of 7 in its population. Some of the fluctuations may be as a result of people being counted in different townlands from one census to the next. If you are not fed up with statistics at this stage we will move on to a comparison of population and houses between 1821 and 2006.
Kinsalebeg Population & Houses from 1821 to 2006
The above table shows the changes in both population and housing for Kinsalebeg from 1821 to 2006. These figures show the massive decrease in the population and housing in Kinsalebeg between 1821 and 2006. The overall decrease in population of 81.55% from 2607 (1821) to 481 (2006) is by any standard an extraordinary change in population. If we applied the same percentage reduction in population to Waterford and the rest of Ireland then the current population of Waterford would be 36,196 and the population of the 26 counties would be 781,343. What is most significant about the population decline is that it continued at such a high rate right through from 1841 to 1961. The population decrease of 21% from the famine period of 1841 to 1851 is more than matched by a similar rate of population decrease from 1851 until the end of the century. The rate of population decrease was lower in the first sixty years of the 20th century but still averaged around a 15% reduction per decade until 1961 when the population of Kinsalebeg hit a low of 408 inhabitants. The population has been gradually increasing since 1961 with a corresponding increase in the number of houses in the parish. It is difficult to establish precisely where the population went but it is apparent that emigration coupled with migration to the towns and cities were major factor. Emigration to the US, Canada, Newfoundland, England, Australia etc was significant from all parts of Ireland after 1841 and no doubt Kinsalebeg people were part of that exodus. A significant number of Waterford people were involved in the fishing expeditions to Newfoundland in the 19th century and many of these eventually emigrated permanently to Newfoundland with no doubt a number of Kinsalebeg seamen and fishermen in their ranks. A more detailed study is required to establish where all the Kinsalebeg people went to and with feedback from relatives or descendants it may be possible to build up a better picture in the decades ahead.
The housing figures for 1821 and 1831 are subject to verification but we include them for completeness. In addition we do not have townland housing figures for the period 1926 to 1981 at this point as they were not part of the released census statistics4 when this overview was being completed.
Kinsalebeg Population Change by Townland for 1841, 1911 and 2006
The above table is a summary of the population of each townland in Kinsalebeg at three points in time over the past two centuries namely 1841, 1911 and 2006. It also shows the accumulated population loss in each townland from 1841 to 2006. Every single Kinsalebeg townland shows a steep population decline with some townlands more heavily affected than others. Ballysallagh lost 315 people and the population declined from a high of 332 inhabitants in 1841 to 17 in 2006. Monatray had a total population of 613 inhabitants in 1841 which had reduced to 56 in 2006. The population of Knockbrack went from 109 inhabitants in 1841 to no inhabitants in 2006 – it is possible that residents of parts of Knockbrack were recorded in nearby townlands such as Drumgullane or Kilmeedy. The townlands of Rath, Knocknageragh, Mortgage, Pilltown, Prospecthall and indeed all townlands of Kinsalebeg show similar population loss.
Ballyheeny Townland Population in 1841, 1911 and 2006
The above table shows townland population changes for the parish of Ballyheeny in the years 1841, 1911 and 2006. We have left Kilmaloo/Clashganny out of the main table for comparative purposes as it sometimes appeared in other parishes (eg Clashmore) at the time of particular census. The Kilmaloo or Clashganny figures are at the bottom of the table. Every townland, with the exception of Kilmaloo East, showed significant population decreases in the period 1841 to 2006. The population of Shanacoole decreased from 332 inhabitants in 1841 to a total of 58 inhabitants in 2006, a decrease of 274 inhabitants or 82% over the period. The Ardsallagh population decreased by 198 inhabitants, or 70%, in the same time period. The overall population decrease in Ballyheeny was approximately 75% from 1720 inhabitants in 1841 to 425 inhabitants in 2006 period. This is a little lower than the average of 83% for Kinsalebeg for the same period.
Kinsalebeg Housing Change by Townland in 1841, 1911 and 2006
The above table shows a reduction in Kinsalebeg of 275 houses or 61% between 1841 and 2006 with the 448 houses of 1841 being reduced to 173 houses in 2006. These figures correspond to the large reduction in population during the same period. The total of 173 houses in 2006 is close to the total of 168 houses which were in Kinsalebeg in 1911 but we are not talking about all the same houses here. In 1991 there were only 129 houses in Kinsalebeg so 39 houses were lost between 1911 and 1991. Since 1991 it would appear that 44 new houses were built in Kinsalebeg which brings the total figure of 173 houses in 2006 back to 1911 levels. The number of houses obviously matches the population figures which show a number of areas with a large housing density such as Ballysallagh, Monatray and Pilltown etc. In many ways Kinsalebeg had a number of separate “villages” in 1841 with a number of relatively small townlands having populations larger than present day villages such as Clashmore, Aglish etc.
Ballyheeny Housing Change by Townland in 1841, 1911 and 2006
The above table summarises the changes in housing stock in Ballyheeny in the years 1841, 1911 and 2006. As in previous tables we have separated Kilmaloo/Clashganny from the main table as this townland sometimes appeared in other parishes. The overall decrease in the number of houses in Ballyheeny in the 1841-2006 period is somewhat less than the pattern in Kinsalebeg in the same period. Ballyheeny had an overall decrease of 118 houses (273 v 155) or 43% in comparison with the Kinsalebeg loss of 275 houses (448 v 173) or 61% in the same period. Most of the Ballyheeny townlands showed an increase in the number of houses between 1911 and 2006 with an overall increase of 33 houses or 27% in the period whereas the overall total for Kinsalebeg was a marginal increase of 5 houses or 3% (168 v 173) in the same period.
Population Changes in Kinsalebeg & Nearby Parishes (1841 to 2006)
If we look briefly at the population statistics for Kinsalebeg and neighbouring parishes we can see that the population loss suffered by Kinsalebeg between 1841 and 2006 is mirrored fairly consistently in the neighbouring parishes. The population decrease for Clashmore, Ardmore, Grange, Glenwilliam and Grallagh comes out at a remarkably consistent 83% to 84% between 1841 and 2006. If we ignore the population “bubble” of an additional 162 inhabitants in Ballyheeny between 1991 and 2006, mainly due to a new housing estate, then the population decrease in Ballyheeny would also be around 83% in the period 1841 to 1991. On overall terms the total population of the above seven nearby parishes decreased from 15,017 to 2799 inhabitants or 82% between 1841 and 2006. The lowest population for most parishes in close proximity to Kinsalebeg would appear to have been around 1961 with a total of 2444 inhabitants across the above seven parishes. In the period from 1961 to 2006 most parishes have shown a relatively small gradual annual population increase with the total number of inhabitants increasing from 2444 to 2769 which represents a 13% increase over the period.
Kinsalebeg Irish Speakers in 1901
The following is a brief summary of the adult native Irish speakers in the parish of Kinsalebeg in the year 1901. We are talking about a period a little over a century ago which is not that long in historic terms. It is extraordinary to think that in 1901 92% of the adult population of Kinsalebeg were Irish speakers and that 86% of the population could speak both Irish and English. The actual figure is probably higher than this as some entries in the census did not have any language recorded under their names. The native Irish had been under extraordinary pressure over the centuries to change their language, religion, nationalistic beliefs, culture and sporting pastimes and this pressure was largely unsuccessful as we can see today with the possible exception of the Irish language. It is ironic that the deterioration in Irish literacy came about mainly due to practical considerations of the Irish themselves and not from external influences. The poor economic situation in Ireland in the 19th and 20th century in particular meant that emigration became the only option for a lot of Irish. Parents decided that they themselves and in particular their children would have to be able to speak English if emigration was to be an option and the speaking of English in the home became the standard language for many people. Additionally the English language became the standard teaching language in schools. In the process the speaking of Irish gradually deteriorated unfortunately and this deterioration continued throughout the 20th century. It is ironic to reflect that over 86% of the adult population of Kinsalebeg were bilingual just over a century ago and that 92% of the adult population in Kinsalebeg were Irish speakers. In comparison a 2007 national survey of the Irish language established that just under 8% of the population of Ireland considered themsleves to be fluent or very fluent in Irish at that time.
If we extend the analysis to adults and children of Kinsalebeg in 1901 then 532 of the 850 inhabitants or 63% spoke Irish & English. This would include children who would be too young to have learnt either Irish or English and therefore should really be excluded from the figures. However the trend of fewer children speaking Irish was now well established. This percentage figure had not changed much by 1911 where 439 of the now 699 inhabitants or 62% spoke Irish & English. This was a reflection however on the fact that the population of Kinsalebeg was an ageing population. Most of the people leaving the parish were younger people who were less likely to be Irish speakers. If we look at the Irish & English speaking population in 1901 in other parts of Waterford and East Cork, as shown in the above table, then there are some obvious trends. The West Waterford districts of Ringville, Ardmore, Grange, Kinsalebeg, Clashmore and Ballyheeny all have bilingual Irish & English speaking populations of over 60% which is high when compared with other areas of Waterford. These percentages would be higher if we excluded children who had not yet learnt to speak either Irish or English. On the East Cork side the nearest comparable area with a high proportion of bilingual speakers at 74% was Kilmacdonagh which incorporates Ballymacoda. At a national level the West Waterford area would have had a high proportion of dual Irish & English speakers in 1901 and would be comparable with other bilingual areas in Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Donegal, Clare and Cork.
If we move on to the 1911 census we can see that over 99% of the over 60 year olds in Kinsalebeg were bilingual at that time ie 113 of the 114 people aged over 60 years from a total Kinsalebeg population of 699. The corresponding bilingual figures for the over 60s age group for neighbouring parishes were similar if a little lower with Clashmore at 87%, Ardmore at 90%, Grange at 93% and Ballyheeny at 82%. We now know from the experiences of other non English speaking countries that it should have been possible to maintain the bilingual capability of the Irish as shown by the people of Kinsalebeg and other parts of Ireland in 1901 and 1911.
Detailed Kinsalebeg 1911 Census Listing
We include in Appendix 1 a full listing of the 699 inhabitants of Kinsalebeg as per the 1911 census. These are listed in name sequence and also in townland sequence. The details of the 1911 and 1901 census2 are available online if further details are required. We include them here as a quick reference to Kinsalebeg inhabitants in 1911. The 1901 and 1911 census are the only two census returns where full details are available online at this moment. The oldest inhabitant of Kinsalebeg in 1911 according to the census was William Dunne of Monatray Middle who is listed as being 110 years of age.
Summary
The population of Kinsalebeg has fluctuated significantly over the centuries and in this it mirrors what was happening elsewhere in the country. War, famine, disease and emigration have had a devastating effect at different periods in all parts of Ireland and Kinsalebeg was not spared any of these. We have recounted how Kinsalebeg was left devastated with no apparent inhabitants in 1351 after the appalling Black Death visitation. The population of Kinsalebeg in 1659 was a paltry 194 inhabitants and of course the preceding century had been yet another horrific period in Irish history with the war, famine and disease surrounding the Desmond rebellions. This was closely followed by the equally destructive 1641 rebellion and the Cromwellian period. By 1821 the Kinsalebeg population had reached 2607 and in 1841 this had reached 2889 inhabitants which was the highest recorded population of Kinsalebeg at any stage in its history. The following period, beginning with the Great Famine of 1845-1852, saw a relentless decrease in the population of Kinsalebeg which did not end until the 1970s. Kinsalebeg lost almost 20% of its population in each decade from 1841 to 1971 and the population went from 2889 inhabitants in 1841 to 408 inhabitants in 1961. Since 1961 the population has slowly increased to the 481 inhabitants recorded in 2006. The famine itself was of course the trigger to the initial population decline from 1841 to 1851 as a result of famine deaths and subsequent emigration or movement to nearby towns. However the decline in population was to continue unabated for the next 120 years mainly due to emigration and migration. There were other factors involved of course including the decline of the fishing industry and the loss of industries such as the milling business. The population decline has now gladly been stemmed and we can only hope that the post Celtic Tiger doom and gloom does not result in a return to the bad old days of forced emigration.
